My girlfriend 30 years ago went with me to hear a musician who had played at the bar where she had worked during the summer as a waitress. I had been in love with him and when I learned she liked him, it was a sign we were of the same kind. Over the years, I sang his songs on the guitar. When our son was born, I sang him Prine’s songs over and over and over as I rocked him to sleep. Tonight my girlfriend—now wife— and I sandwiched that boy, who is now 15 at a John Prine show.
