Sunday morning I interviewed Andy Blankenbuehler, Lin-Manuel Miranda,Thomas Kail, and Alex Lacamoire about Hamilton, for which they were getting a Kennedy Center Honor. We talked about collaboration and idea creation: Where ideas come from, how we create space to find them, how our partners add to an idea with their own contributions, but also by reminding us of ourselves. Also: what does it mean to be original and how a new thought can really be quite old but presented in a new way that excavates emotion from the audience. I have occasionally done interviews with people who don’t want to express their truth, so it was a delight to talk to four people who are so deeply invested in their process and ideas and who can articulate them with such sparkle and power. Oh, and this is a picture of us looking at Hamilton’s draft of the Reynolds pamphlet, which really overwhelmed me. The interview will air soon.
