We posted an extended version of my interview on American partisanship with Smithsonian curator Jon Grinspan. Grinspan told me, “My response to everything as a historian is, ‘There’s a long story there,'” and this version captures a bit more of that story than the piece that aired on Sunday Morning a couple weeks ago.
The longer cut does a deeper dive into the parallels between our partisan politics today and the acrimony of the late 19th century. Grinspan walks through how politics unwound from the peak misinformation and violence in that era. Timely moment to study proven strategies, given the armed act of intimidation in AZ this weekend. Some aspects of our political life are the same in our world today.
